A country and discipline pair appears here when the discipline is substantial across the corpus but thin in that country. Measured by location quotient— the country’s share of a discipline against the corpus share — so it reflects composition rather than size.

Only countries with at least 2 000 subject assignments are included: below that, an absence is sampling noise rather than a signal.

About these figures

A snapshot of how OpenAlex classifies the published output of researchers by institution and broad subject. Sources: OpenAlex, HAL and DOAJ.

  • Counts are records, not verified people — roughly 6.7 % share a name with another record, so totals are an upper bound.
  • Subjects are classifications of published work, not skills anyone declared. Locations are the institution’s, not the person’s.
  • There is no time dimension: nothing here describes trends, growth or how recent a researcher’s work is.
  • Coverage reflects what OpenAlex indexes and what we collected — not a country’s research capacity.
